Bridging the gap: Equity in global oncology through precision prevention and medicine

Abstract

The global burden of cancer is disproportionately borne by low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to advanced diagnostic tools, targeted therapies, and clinical trials is limited. This disparity, fueled by socioeconomic factors, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and lack of trained personnel, creates a significant equity gap in global oncology. Precision medicine, with its focus on tailoring cancer treatment and prevention strategies to an individual's genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, holds immense promise for revolutionizing cancer care. However, its implementation in LMICs faces substantial challenges, including high costs, limited availability of genetic testing and targeted drugs, and a lack of data on diverse populations.

This paper explores how precision prevention and medicine can be leveraged to bridge the equity gap in global oncology. We propose a multi-pronged approach that emphasizes affordable and scalable solutions. This includes the development of low-cost, point-of-care diagnostic tools, the implementation of precision prevention strategies like tailored screening programs and vaccination initiatives, and the establishment of international collaborations to facilitate technology transfer and capacity building. We highlight the critical role of data sharing and the creation of diverse genomic databases to ensure that precision medicine is relevant and effective for all populations. By focusing on equitable access and community-based interventions, we can harness the power of precision oncology to reduce cancer disparities and improve outcomes for patients worldwide. This requires a paradigm shift from a one-size-fits-all approach to a more personalized, culturally sensitive, and financially sustainable model of cancer care.
